HERS Testing Terminology (Simplified)
Title 24 Energy Report
A required document outlining a building’s projected energy efficiency, submitted before
construction or alteration.
HVAC Tests
Duct Leakage Test
Measures air loss from HVAC ductwork to meet Title 24. Improves efficiency and air quality.
Airflow Test
Checks if HVAC airflow meets required standards for system performance and comfort.
Refrigerant Charge Verification
Ensures HVAC refrigerant levels are correct for energy efficiency and system longevity.
Watt Draw Test
Evaluates the fan’s energy use in an HVAC system. Lower wattage means better performance.
New Construction & Building Systems
QII (Quality Insulation Installation)
Verifies insulation is installed properly to prevent gaps and increase energy savings.
Indoor Air Quality (IAQ)
Ensures adequate fresh air and proper ventilation to support a healthier indoor environment.
Fenestration Verification
Confirms that windows, skylights, and doors meet efficiency standards.
Lighting Verification
Ensures energy-efficient lighting and proper controls are installed.
Water Heater Verification
Confirms water heaters are installed efficiently and meet code requirements.
Solar PV System Verification
Validates proper solar panel installation and system performance under Title 24.
Documentation Stages
CF1R
Initial design-phase report showing the planned energy compliance for a project.
CF2R
Construction-phase form verifying the installation of components like HVAC, ducts, or windows.
CF3R
Final verification by a HERS rater confirming performance and compliance of tested systems.
Special Installation Forms (Non-HERS)
Used by contractors for alterations or installations not requiring HERS verification:
● CF2R-ADD/ALT: For simple additions or modifications.
● CF2R-MCH: HVAC installations, ductwork, whole house fans.
● CF2R-ENV: Fenestration, insulation, roofing, and solar readiness.
HERS Compliance Forms (With Testing)
Verified by HERS raters to ensure energy code compliance in areas like:
● Duct leakage, airflow, fan power, and refrigerant charge
● Indoor air quality and ventilation
● Insulation quality and building envelope air sealing
● Verified EER/SEER ratings and filter sizing
● Variable capacity heat pump credit eligibility
